Assessing The Impacts Of Streetcars On The Economy, Equity, And The Quality Of Urban Life
This research project, assessing the impact of Streetcars on Equity,
Economics and Quality of Urban Life, aims to explore the benefits and costs that
come with the "streetcar movement" which is currently taking across the nation
using the lens of the development of economics, equity and quality of living.
The question is: Can streetcars be utilized to boost economic development and
urban quality of living that will benefit all residents equally?
The Problem Statement
Streetcars, influenced by the success of the Portland streetcar in
revitalizing urban areas are a preferred choice for transit infrastructure
investments across cities. Streetcars are renowned for encouraging economic
growth along their routes, revitalizing inner-city neighborhoods and enhancing
the urban quality of living. But, there is an opportunity that streetcars might
create an increase in costs for housing and lead to residents with low incomes
not having access to transit infrastructure. The research will examine the
relationship between the positive and negative consequences of streetcar
projects using three case studies. Within this larger context, the project will
initiate an ongoing study of Salt Lake City's Sugarhouse streetcar that is
scheduled to start operation in the month of December. The studies include
economic development, public attitudes across different populations throughout
time, and the need for and efficacy of affordable housing programs associated
with the project. Check

Methodology
This project will include a series of case studies that compare before and
after cases using available and brand new information regarding
non-tourist-oriented development of streetcars in North America. It will include
a comprehensive analysis of the Sugarhouse streetcar in Salt Lake City. The
methods will comprise a quantitative economic analysis of growth due to the
streetcar, qualitative survey analyses of attitudes toward the streetcar and
quality of life in the streetcar corridor, and an analysis of affordable housing
programs associated with the development of transit-oriented
communities.
A significant contribution to current research
To date, the arguments in favor of streetcars as urban economic development
catalysts are mostly anecdotal and are usually presented simply by comparing
development dollars. We propose an approach that quantifies and weighs the
benefits and costs of streetcars from a broader comparative perspective. This
research will help communities that are interested in investing in streetcars to
know what questions to be asking and will provide a list of programs that have
proven efficient in minimizing negative outcomes and increasing positive
results.
The community and local organizations will find this study invaluable. This
research was initiated at the Sugarhouse streetcar's start. It provides the
basis for the future analysis and study of the project. This research will
provide vital information to the various agencies on which future decisions
could be made.
Impact on the larger community
Any city must strive to build neighborhoods that are economically viable, socially cohesive as well as sustainable and equitable. While streetcars are a viable option to achieve these goals, there is not much empirical research to back this up. This research aims to quantify investigate the possibilities of streetcars as urban renewal catalysts. As a result, communities who are interested in making investments in streetcars know better what expectations are reasonable,Richard Mille Replica what questions to ask, and what strategies have proven successful in maximizing the positive and minimizing the negative outcomes of streetcar projects.
